Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Geopark Meratus and Geopark Kebumen have officially been designated as UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGG) by the UNESCO Executive Board during its 221st session held in Paris, France.

“This marks a new chapter for South Kalimantan. With this designation, our tourism should become more globally connected,” said Hanifah Dwi Nirwana, the Chair of the Meratus Geopark Development Board, on Wednesday (16/4/2025).

The official certificate will be awarded in September, according to antaranews.com..

Geopark Meratus, located in South Kalimantan, and Kebumen in Central Java, were among 16 new geoparks from 11 countries that were approved by consensus. The designation recognizes their unique geological features and rich cultural heritage.

With these additions, Indonesia now has 12 UNESCO Global Geoparks, including Batur, Belitong, Ciletuh, Gunung Sewu, Ijen, Maros Pangkep, Merangin Jambi, Raja Ampat, Rinjani Lombok, and Toba Caldera.

Ambassador Mohamad Oemar, the Head of the Indonesian delegation, emphasized that this recognition carries the responsibility to preserve and promote geological and cultural heritage sustainably.
