inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Professor of the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia, prof. Mirra Noor Milla, assessed that Indonesia has succeeded in suppressing acts of terrorism and over the past two years has recorded zero attacks, but the threat of terrorism has not completely disappeared.

According to her, the threat of terrorism in the future will be more hidden and difficult to detect, so that vigilance and early detection of potential terrorism must continue to be increased.

"The threat of terrorism still exists, and we need to strengthen the early detection system to mitigate potential attacks before they occur," said Mirra in her statement quoted from Antaranews on Thursday (6/5/2025).

According to the European Union Terrorism Situation and Trend Report (EU TE-SAT) 2024, although no terrorist attacks occurred, a number of failed or thwarted incidents are also part of the indicators that need to be considered. At least, in 2024, the European Union recorded 120 terrorist attacks, with attacks based on 'religion' being the most dangerous.

On the other hand, in Indonesia, one proof of a real threat of terrorism is the arrest of a suspected terrorist member with the initials MAS (18) who was arrested by Densus 88 Anti-Terror on May 24, 2025 in Gowa, South Sulawesi. MAS is suspected of being a member of the Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) group affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Also a spreader of ISIS propaganda in Purworejo some time ago.

Therefore, according to Mirra, it is important to balance optimism about achieving zero terrorist attacks with vigilance against potential threats that are more difficult to see. Mirra emphasized that terrorist groups can adapt, metamorphose both in strategy and within the group itself.

"What we need to do is we must continue to observe, continue to observe, identify to recognize the potential risks, including the environment that supports terrorist attacks," he said.

Mirra said that the results of the 2021 national survey of the political psychology laboratory showed that the highest conflict potential index in Indonesia was in areas where there had been previous conflicts.

This is a warning for the government to prepare mitigation measures for conflict in these areas which could allow these risks to develop into extreme violence.
