Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia has secured ownership of hotel and land assets in Mecca after winning a competitive auction, paving the way for the development of an Indonesia Hajj Village to improve services for pilgrims, the government announced on Tuesday (6/1/2026).
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the acquisition was reported during the Cabinet retreat in Hambalang, Bogor, noting, “Indonesia has now won the bidding and owns its own hotel in Mecca, made possible through the President’s extraordinary diplomacy.”
The assets include the Novotel Thakher Makkah hotel and approximately five hectares of land, marking the first time Saudi Arabia has allowed a foreign government to own property, according to antaranews.com.
The project, led by Indonesia sovereign wealth fund Danantara, aims to centralize accommodation, logistics, and services for Indonesian pilgrims close to the Grand Mosque.
President Prabowo Subianto initiated the move to enhance protection, comfort, and efficiency for Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.
