Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh has handled 1,301 Indonesian citizen-related cases in the first quarter of 2025, with 85% involving online scams.
The figure is a 263% increase from the same period last year, signaling an alarming rise in cross-border cybercrime, according ao antaranews.com.
“Despite repeated warnings and widespread media coverage, many Indonesians are lured by deceptive job offers promising high pay and minimal requirements,” said Ambassador Santo Darmosumarto on Thursday (24/4/2025).
Most victims were coerced into scam operations targeting Indonesians at home and had been in Cambodia for over six months.
The embassy is intensifying collaboration with Indonesian authorities to enhance prevention, response, and enforcement efforts. Ambassador Santo emphasized the urgent need for digital literacy to curb illegal recruitment and online crime.
As many as 28 deaths involving Indonesians were reported, up 75% from the previous year. Causes ranged from chronic illnesses and infectious diseases to accidents, highlighting broader health and welfare concerns for Indonesian citizens in Cambodia.
