Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani led the General Committee of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) or the conference of the Parliamentary Union of countries that are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). In her speech, she stated that Islam has the capital to become a new world power.

Puan then touched on the issue of Muslims in the world who have reached two billion people. She said that the number of Muslims has dominated almost 25 percent of the global population.

"Ideally, we can become a new element of power in the world order. At one point, Islam was the capital to become a new world power. We are a civilization that emphasizes the unity of the people," said Puan at the Senayan Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Wednesday (5/14/2025).

Puan also called Islam as a civilization that values ​​diversity and pluralism, as reflected in the Medina Charter.

"In fact, Islam has reached a golden age that gave birth to philosophers, scientists, engineers, who contributed to the development of world technology and culture," she added.

However, Puan said that various challenges both domestic and global are currently looming over Muslim countries and countries with Muslim majorities in showing their role as a group to be reckoned with in the world.

"At the domestic level, we still need to answer various questions from the public about whether we are able to provide good, transparent, and accountable public services," said Puan.

In addition, said Puan, the Islamic world must also overcome various grips of global political interests and strengthen efforts to maintain solidarity between OIC member countries.

Therefore, Puan admitted that she was happy to see the Parliamentary Delegations of OIC Countries being able to attend to discuss the main topic of this conference, namely "PUIC Silver Jubilee - Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience".

"This topic was chosen as our effort to see and build inward, both as a country, parliament, and PUIC organization, so that we can contribute better to the people and the public and the world," said Puan.

After the presentation of opinions, this session then conducted the election of the composition of the Bureau Leadership for the 19th PUIC Conference consisting of the Conference President, two Vice Chairs and the Rapporteur.
