Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. In a significant development, the Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Nurul Ghufron, has publicly apologized after KPK Chairman Firli Bahuri was declared a suspect in an extortion case by the Jakarta Metropolitan Regional Police.
Ghufron admitted in a written statement on Friday (24/11/2023) that the incident had caused turmoil in society and nearly undermined public confidence in KPK's role as the frontline defender against corruption in the country, antaranews.com reported.
"Of course, this incident will be a lesson for us and an area for evaluation, both internally and externally. We are committed to making improvements and are open to suggestions from the public for future improvements," he said.
Amid the ongoing controversy, Ghufron appealed to the public to continue to support the KPK to improve the commission's work.
After the Jakarta Police named Firli as a suspect in a case involving alleged extortion against former Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo, KPK Deputy Chairman Alexander Marwata said that Firli has the right to challange the designation of his legal status as a suspect and declared its commitment to providing legal assistance to Firli, emphasizing the principle of presumption of innocence.
