Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. A violent clash between rival supporters of Puncak Jaya’s regent candidates has resulted in nine deaths and 428 injuries, according to Central Papua Regional Police Chief Brigadier General Alfred Papare on Tuesday (11/3/2025).

The conflict, which began on 5 February 2025, led to widespread destruction, with 179 buildings—including a school and a village hall—set ablaze. As many as 28 vehicles were torched, and nearly 2,000 residents sought refuge at police and military facilities, as reported by antaranews.com.

To restore order, security forces conducted raids, seizing traditional weapons and air rifles. Authorities arrested six alleged war leaders, who remain under investigation.

“If proven responsible, they will be charged accordingly,” said Chief Alfred.

The Central Papua governor has mediated talks between rival candidates, while police continue urging displaced supporters to return home.

Puncak Jaya Sub-regional Police Chief Superintendent Kuswara emphasized ongoing security operations.

“We will enforce the law to prevent further violence,” he asserted.
