Inp.polri.go.id - Surabaya. Following the Gresik United vs. Deltras FC match in the ongoing Liga 2 Indonesia at Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium on Sunday, the Gresik Sub-regional Police had to resort to firing tear gas due to escalating violence among supporters outside the stadium.
According to the Head of Public Relations Department for East Java Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Dirmanto, the decision to use tear gas was driven by the supporters becoming increasingly unruly, leading to a disturbance in the vicinity of Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium, antaranews.com reported.
"The reason is the escalation of the riot; the supporters became more unruly," he said in the early hours of Monday (20/11/2023).
While acknowledging the Indonesian National Police Regulation No. 10/2022 prohibits the use of tear gas in securing football matches, the spokesperson explained that the prohibition was specifically for use inside the stadium.
Furthermore, he said that the East Java Regional Police, along with Gresik Sub-Regional Police, immediately conducted a crime scene investigation in the Gelora Joko Samudro Stadium area after the incident.
