Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Jayawijaya Sub-regional Police are investigating a riot that erupted during the Saturday afternoon celebration event for the Jayawijaya Regent and Deputy Regent in Wamena, leaving six people injured, including three police officers.
Jayawijaya Police Chief Superintendent Heri Wibowo confirmed on Sunday (16/3/2025) that the violence broke outn at Kama Football Field, J.B. Wenas Street.
“The clash began when a group of intoxicated people entered the bakar batu area, triggering stone-throwing and wooden projectiles between rival groups,” he said, referring to the traditional communal cooking method practiced by indigenous Papuans, often part of ceremonies and celebrations..
As police and Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officers attempted to disperse the crowd, the situation escalated, with rioters attacking officers and setting fire to a police truck.
Seven vehicles were vandalized in the chaos. Order was restored after the Indonesian Military (TNI) reinforcements arrived. Authorities have since increased patrols and blockades to prevent further unrest.
