Inp.polri.go.id - Nabire. Fifteen inmates escaped from Nabire Prison, Papua, on Monday morning (29/9/2025), the Regional Head of the Directorate General of Corrections ( Mulawarman confirmed.
“The escape happened around 07:30 WIT. The prisoners used ladders and ropes to climb the walls and were only detected through CCTV,” he said.
Antaranews.com reported that this incident was the second major breakout this year. In June, 19 inmates also fled the same facility. Mulawarman admitted that previous evaluations highlighted the urgent need for a stronger perimeter wall around the prison.
The prison currently houses 197 inmates, far exceeding its 150-person capacity. Authorities released the names of the escapees, including Roy Pais, Valentinus Mareku, Ayub Edowai, Yakobus Waine, and 11 others.
Police and correctional officers are now conducting a manhunt across Nabire and surrounding areas to recapture the fugitives and prevent further incidents.
