Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Soekarno-Hatta Airport Customs Office in Tangerang has foiled an attempt to smuggle 5,900 grams of narcotics originating from the United States and Colombia.
"Starting from late 2023 to early 2024, our enforcement teams have arrested two Indonesian nationals and one Colombian national, confiscating 3,106 grams of marijuana and 2,805 grams of liquid cocaine separately," Gatot Sugeng Wibowo, the Head of the Customs Office, said on Tuesday (27/2/2024).. This intervention resulted in the arrest of three suspects, including two Indonesians identified as MG (37) and HG (44), and one Colombian named MI (45), antaranews.com reported. The initial interception took place on 27 December 2023, involving a package from California, USA, destined for the UK. Upon being rejected, the package was returned to its origin. Suspicions arose when the intended recipient denied any knowledge of the shipment. Further scrutiny of the package, labeled as "Play-Doh Modeling Compound Pack" and addressed to a company in Cengkareng, Jakarta Barat, uncovered three packages of dried leaves weighing a total of 1,549 grams, testing positive for marijuana. Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of similar anomalies in a package labeled "Black Red Portable Bluetooth Speaker" sent from the same sender in America, albeit with a different company name. On 11 January 2024, a third interception was made involving a package from Colombia, South America, containing a suspicious liquid concealed within a health device. The liquid, weighing 2,805 grams, tested positive for cocaine. The seized evidence has been handed over to the Soekarno-Hatta Airport police for further investigation into the phishing scheme misusing Indonesian addresses for return shipments. The crackdown has potentially saved 15,000 lives and prevented Rp23 billion in rehabilitation costs. The suspects face severe penalties under the Narcotics Law No. 35 of 2009, including the possibility of the death penalty or life imprisonment. Gatot urged the public to protect their personal data and accounts to prevent misuse by irresponsible parties.
