Inp.polri.go.id - Pangkalpinang. The Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs reported that 7,596 Indonesian migrant workers have been involved in digital crimes such as online scams abroad since 2021.
“We are facing a serious challenge in this digital era,” said Deputy for Foreign Political Affairs Mohammad Kurniadi Koba during a coordination meeting on migrant worker protection in Bangka Belitung, Wednesday (9/7/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
The majority of cases occurred in Cambodia, followed by Myanmar, the Philippines, Laos, and Thailand.
These migrants were often recruited through social media with promises of high salaries and comfortable jobs, only to be exploited into online fraud schemes, fake investments, and even money laundering operations.
Many had their documents confiscated, movement restricted, and were subjected to violence.
