Inp.polri.go.id - Banda Aceh. The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Banda Aceh Sub-Regional City Police has examined 11 Rohingya refugees, discovering indications of a suspected human trafficking crimes network entering Indonesia through Aceh, also involving local residents in three provinces, namely Aceh, North Sumatera, and Riau. Police Assistant Superintendent Fadillah Aditya Pratama, Head of the Banda Aceh Sub-Regional City Police's Criminal Investigation Unit, stated on Thursday (14/12/23) that the 11 Rohingya refugees were among 137 individuals who landed on Lamreh Beach, Aceh Besar Regency, on December, 10 2023. The investigation identifies two refugees in the group thought to have pivotal roles in the human trafficking network from Bangladesh to Indonesia. "Based on our investigation, both individuals have important roles. Other witnesses support suspicions of transactions, profits, and the control or recruitment of hundreds of Rohingya people entering Aceh," he said. However, he stated that more detailed investigation information cannot be disclosed until suspects are officially named. He emphasized the need to ensure accuracy based on the collected evidence, as the case involves a team comprising immigration officials, language experts, and the General Crime Investigation Directorate of the Aceh Regional Police. "So far, they are still considered witnesses. We will soon designate them as suspects," he affirmed. Earlier this week, President Joko Widodo instructed law enforcement to take firm action against suspected human trafficking linked to the influx of Rohingya refugees. (ar/inp/pr/nm)
