inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The development of artificial intelligence (AI) brings both new opportunities and challenges to the Indonesian justice system.

One important challenge is ensuring the authenticity of electronic evidence amidst AI's ability to create content that resembles reality.

Vice Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, stated that the development of Generative AI enables the creation of various forms of "synthetic reality," from photos and videos to sounds that appear to resemble real events. Nezar made this statement at the National Law Forum in Central Jakarta on Monday (8/24/2026).

"The current development of Generative AI is capable of producing what we call synthetic reality in various media formats. This is significant when we consider that in judicial processes, evidence in the form of recordings, videos, and photographs is presented," Nezar explained.

According to him, AI's ability to produce content that is becoming more difficult to distinguish from reality makes the process of authenticating evidence a serious concern in trials.

"This is a crucial test. How can the evidence convince the panel of judges? How can the court authenticate the evidence presented in court?" he stressed.

Despite presenting challenges, Nezar stated that AI also provides benefits to the judicial system. This technology can help speed up and streamline a number of processes, including handling case administration.

He cited the example of the Supreme Court, which has utilized AI technology through its smart panel system to help process tens of thousands of case administration cases.

"For example, the Supreme Court has used artificial intelligence technology to create a kind of smart panel to process tens of thousands of incoming case administration cases," Nezar said.

In addition to administration, AI is also beginning to be used to assist in the preparation of legal analyses. The presence of this technology is considered to ease the workload of parties involved in the judicial process.

However, Nezar emphasized that the use of AI does not mean transferring decision-making authority to technology.

Decisions in the judicial process remain in the hands of humans, particularly judges.
