Inp.polri.go.id - Banda Aceh. The Banda Aceh Sub-Regional City Police's Criminal Investigation Unit has arrested a 35-year-old Rohingya refugee named MA from Myanmar.
The arrest is linked to a suspected human trafficking case, according to Police Senior Superintendent Fahmi Irwan Ramli, Chief of Banda Aceh Police.
MA, identified as a resident of a Rohingya ethnic shelter in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, is among the 137 Rohingya individuals who recently arrived in Aceh. Currently, they are temporarily housed in the underground parking area of Balai Meseuraya Aceh in Banda Aceh.
Upon their arrival, MA, along with another individual named AH, separated from the group. Local residents promptly arrested the pair, handing them over to the local police station.
Chief Fahmi said, "Based on the preliminary examination, there is a strong suspicion that they are involved in alleged human trafficking related to relocating Rohingya ethnic residents from the Cox's Bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh to Indonesia."
MA has admitted to enticing Rohingya residents to leave Cox's Bazar for Indonesia, charging each individual approximately Rp14-16 million. He played a key role in captaining the boat and coordinating with witnesses AH and HB.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the police have interviewed 12 Rohingya witnesses and seized various pieces of evidence, including a ship marked "Nazma."
