Inp.polri.go.id – Banten. Banten officially announce to close the pedestrian path to Ujung Kulon Peninsula from November 1st, 2023 to undisclosed time. The closing was meant for ecosystem recovery and also effort to safeguard the habitat of One-Horned Rhino.
The total closure will only apply to civilians and tourists. Banten officials states only researchers can enter the area to minimize human activities in the one-horned rhino's natural habitat.
The Javan Rhinoceros was listed among the critically endangered species in the Red List Data Book which was released by International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
Quoted from cnnindonesia, the Javan Rhinoceros was also listed in Apedix I Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as the species which are very few in nature and are feared to be extinct.
“From our monitoring since 2020, we found there are less rhino activity in tourism trek and shifted to more secure location, while the habitat of Java Rhinoceros is only at Ujung Kulon Peninsula,” explain Ardi Andoni, Head of the Ujung Kulon National Park Office, in his official statement.
The Javan Rhino is an animal that requires a certain exploration area and are very observant with their surroundings. This animal is also very shy and prefer to avoid human activities, down to human trek, smell, and other signs of human activities.
