The Belu Sub-Regional Police arrested three Sekato residents from Oecusse District, Timor Leste, for unauthorized entry into Indonesia through the Belu Regency area, said Police Superintendent Richo Nataldo Devallas Simanjuntak, Chief of Belu Sub-Regional Police on Monday (23/10/23).
The trio, identified as MK (20), RIDC (26), and JK (21), were found hiding in Bintang Laut Warehouse, Jenilu Village, Kakuluk Mesak District.
Following questioning by police and immigration officials, they admitted to entering Indonesia without proper documentation. Their route involved an illegal crossing from Timor-Leste through Sone, North Central Timor Regency to Jenilu Village, Belu Regency.
He said that the individuals were selling copper allegedly stolen from the State Electricity Company of Oecusse, Timor Leste.
"They admitted that the copper came from the remains of cables belonging to PLN Oecusse. Two of the three illegal border crossers have entered Indonesia several times to sell the copper at the Bintang Laut warehouse in Atapupu for around IDR 80,000 per kilogram," the police chief explained.
The individuals have been transferred to the Immigration Class II Atambua Immigration Checkpoint for processing in accordance with Indonesian immigration laws.
