Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian government initiated Weather Modification Operations across West Java, Central Java, and Bali on Wednesday (4/3/2024) to mitigate the risks of extreme hydrometeorological disasters.
Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Teuku Faisal Fathani, confirmed the strategic move following the detection of tropical cyclone seeds 90S and 93S in the Indian Ocean.
"In collaboration with BNPB and provincial governments, we are starting these operations today to anticipate extreme weather conditions," he said during a press briefing reported by antaranews.com.
The cloud seeding operations aim to reduce rainfall intensity by 20% to 40%, preventing floods and landslides in vulnerable regions. While Jakarta remains under close observation for potential inclusion, authorities urged local governments to prioritize river normalization and drainage maintenance.
Experts predict the volatile weather patterns, driven by the southern cyclones, may persist for several days, necessitating continued atmospheric intervention to ensure public safety and infrastructure integrity.
