Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has said  that a magnitude 5.8 shallow earthquake that struck the waters off the western coast of Sumatra in Aceh Besar on Sunday afternoon (13/10/2024) carried no potential for a tsunami following the earthquake.

Daryono, the BMKG Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, explained that the earthquake was recorded at a depth of 43 kilometers, with coordinates of 7.35 degrees South Latitude and 106.49 degrees East Longitude, approximately 121 kilometers southwest of Banda Aceh.

The seismic activity was attributed to the subduction of tectonic plates in the region.

Following detailed seismic modeling by the Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS), BMKG’s monitoring team found no aftershocks reported as of 2.30 pm local time.

The agency urged the public to remain calm and to disregard any unverified rumors regarding the earthquake. According to BMKG’s analysis, the tremor was felt in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI, while Sabang and Pidie experienced a III MMI intensity.

BMKG did not receive reports of any damage caused by the earthquake but encouraged residents to stay informed about seismic activities and to follow disaster mitigation guidelines from the local disaster management agency (BPBD) in Aceh Province.
