inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) continues to strengthen the national tsunami early warning system to deal with various potential sources of seismic and non-seismic disasters, such as tectonic earthquakes, underwater landslides and volcanic activity.

Head of BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati said that the construction of operational disaster detection facilities in Bali is an innovation in the latest national tsunami early warning system technology presented by the government.

The operational facility of the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) in Kuta, Bali was built with funding support from the World Bank through the Indonesia Disaster Resilience Initiatives Project (IDRIP).

"This initiative is not only reactive to disasters that have occurred, but is also designed as an anticipatory step to protect coastal communities from the threat of tsunamis in the future," said the Head of BMKG, Tuesday (6/17/2025).

She explained that the Palu and Krakatoa tsunamis in 2018 was an important lesson that the early warning system should not only focus on one type of trigger. Both disasters show that underwater landslides and volcanic eruptions can also trigger large tsunamis.

Dwikorita hopes that this BMKG facility can be an important part of the national tsunami early warning system that is adaptive to various types of disasters.
