Inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned the public abouth the extreme weather potential during Christmas and 2024 New Year Eve.
“Be warned with those who lived in southern Indonesia, including Java and southern Sumatra, because after Christmas to early 2024 there might be a downpour along with storm,” says BMKG Chairperson Dwikorita Karnawati in her official statement on Wednesday (12/20/2023).
Dwikorita says that the extreme weather is because of the atmosphere dynamics due to Indonesia's position between two continents and two oceans. The extreme weather needs to also be considered during times before Christmas, particularly in northern Indonesia.
“However, before Christmas, those who lived in northern Indonesia such as North Sumatra, Aceh, and Kalimantan, have to be aware with the extreme weather,” warned Dwikorita.
Other than extreme weather, there are also potentials of high tides in Indian and Pacific Ocean, and also the Sunda Strait. In response to this, Dwikorita implores shipping companies, ferry transportation, fishermen and the general public to be careful while in the sea waters.
