Counterrorism Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88) of the Indonesian National Police successfully arrested 24 people involved in the suspected fundraising for Jamaah Islamiyah (JI), an extremist group related to Al Qaeda that has conducted the largest militant attacks in Indonesia.
"The suspects have raised funds for JI through two Islamic charity foundations, and their arrest would help to construct the militant funding illustration in Indonesia", the Chief of Operation Assistance Board of Densus 88, Police Grand Commissioner Aswin Siregar, said on Sunday (28/11/21).
JI network is suspected to be the mastermind of the Bali Bombing in 2002 at two nightclubs and killed 200 people, most of them Australians.
Based on the received information, two foundations that used to be the fundraising front for JI have collected USD2 million, even though the estimated number may be higher.
"USD700,000 in cash was found at the office of one of the foundations", Police Grand Commissioner Aswin Siregar said.
