inp.polri.go.id - Kupang. The escape of a man with the initials YPSB (46) has finally come to an end. After nearly three years of moving from city to city to evade authorities, the suspect was successfully arrested by the Kupang Sub-regional City Police Criminal Investigation Unit in Batam City, Riau Islands Province.
The successful arrest was announced directly by Kupang Sub-regional City Police Chief, Senior Superintendent Djoko Lestari, at a press conference on Thursday (7/9/2026).
At the press conference, the suspect, who is known to be a lecturer, appeared before the media wearing prison garb.
"Today, we announce the successful arrest of the YPSB suspect, who was involved in four different police reports. The modus operandi used was quite diverse, ranging from embezzlement of land certificates, embezzlement of rental vehicles, to fraud using fake ownership documents," said Djoko.
He explained that investigators had handled the four cases, all allegedly carried out by the suspect using different methods, resulting in losses to victims amounting to hundreds of millions of rupiah.
The first case began in August 2023 when the suspect borrowed a land certificate belonging to the victim, identified as RK, with the promise to return it after three months. Around the same time, the suspect also rented a Toyota Kijang Super belonging to the victim. However, unbeknownst to the victim, the car was pawned to another party for IDR 30 million.
The next case involved an alleged fraudulent sale of approximately 2,000 square meters of land in the Nekamese area of Kupang Regency. The suspect offered the victim, identified as RL, a plot of land for IDR 100 million. Although the transaction took place before a notary, the promised land certificate was never delivered.
In another case, the suspect rented a Daihatsu Xenia belonging to the victim, identified as HNCL, in July 2022. Instead of returning the vehicle, he pawned it to another party for IDR 57 million.
In the fourth case, the suspect again used the same car as collateral to borrow money from the victim, identified as RP. To gain the victim's trust, the suspect allegedly fabricated fake vehicle ownership documents and a lost report, resulting in a loss of IDR 57 million.
In addition to apprehending the suspect, investigators also confiscated several pieces of important evidence, including a Toyota Kijang Super with the original vehicle registration (STNK) and vehicle ownership certificate (BPKB), a Daihatsu Xenia, vehicle rental agreements, proof of land purchase transactions, pawn receipts, and several documents allegedly forged by the suspect.
Djoko revealed that after learning he had been reported to the police in October 2023, YPSB fled East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and moved from Surabaya to Banyuwangi, Gresik, Semarang, Banten, and Pekanbaru, finally settling in Batam in May 2024.
"While in Batam, the suspect attempted to hide his identity by working as an honorary teacher at a private school. However, an investigation by the police successfully uncovered his whereabouts," explained Djoko.
Now YPSB is officially being detained at the Kupang Sub-regional City Police Detention Center and charged with multiple articles, namely Article 372 of the Criminal Code concerning Embezzlement in conjunction with Article 486 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, as well as Article 378 of the Criminal Code concerning Fraud in conjunction with Article 492 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code.
