inp.polri.go.id - Gorontalo. Gorontalo Regional Police Chief Inspector General Widodo, is preparing to face the threat of a prolonged drought potentially triggered by the El Niño phenomenon.

This situation is a serious concern for the regional government and the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum, considering its potential widespread impacts, ranging from clean water availability and agricultural issues to an increased risk of forest and land fires.

In the meeting, Chief Widodo and  the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum are coordinating steps to strengthen preparedness for the potential impacts of El Niño.

Cross-sector coordination is key to ensuring any potential issues can be anticipated early and addressed quickly when they arise.

“Anticipatory measures should not only focus on disaster management but also ensure the community's basic needs are met. The availability of clean water, protection of agricultural land, and the readiness of personnel and firefighting facilities are among the areas that require attention,” Widodo said.

He further emphasized the importance of cooperation between all parties in dealing with extreme weather conditions. The police are ready to support local governments by monitoring areas, strengthening coordination, and deploying personnel if the community needs assistance.

Furthermore, the public is also urged to be more vigilant. Wise water use, avoiding indiscriminate land burning, and immediately reporting any hotspots or emergencies are all important forms of participation in facing the dry season.

With collaboration between the government, security forces, relevant agencies, and the community, Gorontalo is expected to weather the threat of El Niño with minimal impact.

"Long-term droughts cannot be stopped, but good preparation and unity can help us in facing them," he concluded.
