inp.polri.go.id - Bengalon. Police confirmed a tragic traffic accident occurred near Simpang Perdau, on the Bengalon-Sangatta highway, in Sepaso Selatan Village, Bengalon District, East Kutai Regency, on Monday (6/22/2026) at around 8:00 a.m.
The fatal incident involved two motorcycles, resulting in the deaths of both riders after their vehicles caught fire.
The victims were identified as Selmi Lovianti Malute (22), the driver of a green Honda Genio with license plate number KT-2140-RFO. Baso Patahuddin (36), the driver of a black Yamaha Vixion with license plate number KT-3850-OR.
Both suffered burns all over their bodies and were pronounced dead. According to reports, the accident began when Baso was traveling from Sangatta towards Bengalon.
"While crossing a gentle curve, the driver allegedly attempted to avoid a pothole on the left side of the road, causing the vehicle to veer into the opposite lane," explained East Kutai Sub-regional Police Chief, Superintendent Fauzan Arianto.
At the same time, Selmi was coming from the opposite direction. Due to the close proximity, the collision was unavoidable.
He said that due to the heavy impact, both riders fell and were crushed by their respective vehicles. A fuel leak then ignited a spark, causing both motorcycles and their riders to catch fire.
Local residents who witnessed the incident attempted to extinguish the fire and render aid. After the fire was extinguished, the two victims were immediately evacuated to the nearest hospital, although they ultimately succumbed to their injuries.
Police officers had handled the incident at the scene, including visiting the crime scene, conducting a crime scene investigation, interviewing witnesses, securing evidence, and evacuating the victims.
Fauzan urges the public to always be careful when driving, especially on damaged roads or potholes.
"We remind all road users to slow down, be more careful, and always pay attention to road conditions ahead. Traffic safety must be a top priority to prevent similar incidents from happening again," he explained.
