inp.polri.go.id - Sorong. The Water and Air Unit Directorate of the Southwest Papua Regional Police introduced a floating library service to expand access to education for children living in coastal and island areas.

The activity, part of the Police Care for Education program, was carried out in collaboration with the Sorong City Sub-regional Police Water and Air Unit in the coastal area of Dom Island and Ram Island docks on Tuesday (11/3/2026).

The Director of the Southwest Papua Regional Police, Water and Air Unit Directorate, Senior Superintendent Budy Utomo, stated that the floating library demonstrates police's commitment to children's education, especially those living in areas with limited access to educational facilities.

"We want to ensure that children living in coastal areas also have the opportunity to learn and develop their knowledge. The presence of the police is not only to maintain water security, but also provides direct benefits to the community," said Budy.

According to Budy, the activity goes beyond providing reading materials, but also fosters learning interactions between police personnel and children through general knowledge introductions and learning support.

In addition to providing education, personnel also introduce children to the dangers of drug abuse and bullying from an early age.

"We want children to grow up in a safe environment and have an understanding of positive things. Character education is also important so they can protect themselves from various negative influences," he explained.

Budy added that his team also encourages parents to increase supervision of their children's activities, especially regarding their use of social media and access to digital content.

He believes that technological developments must be balanced with family support so that children can utilize advances in information to support their education, rather than being exposed to influences that will harm their future.

Furthermore, Budy emphasized that the floating library is part of the police's preventative and humanistic approach to building relationships with coastal communities.

Through this activity, police personnel are expected to be recognized not only as guardians of maritime security but also as community partners in supporting education and child protection.
