Saipul Mbuinga, the Regent of Pohuwato, has confirmed on Thursday (21/9/2023) that the local administration facilities, including the regent's office, the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) office, and the regent's official residence, were damaged during a demonstration in Marisa, Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo Province on Thursday (21/9/2023).
"Tomorrow, we'll hold a meeting. Services will continue, possibly from a shared office space, " he said as reported by anataranews.com
The Regent could not confirm the extent of the damage or any casualties among government employees.
The Gorontalo Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Agesta Romano Yoyol, confirmed security remained stable into the evening, with additional personnel deployed.
The protest, led by the Pohuwato People's Consultative Assembly Alliance (MPRP) and the Pohuwato Heirs' Mining Union Alliance, resulted in the burning of the regent office and residence, DPRD and PT PETS office. The protesters demanded land compensation for PT PETS, a mining company.
The government has not assessed the total losses.
