The government has established a high-security correctional facility on Nusa Kambangan Island, Central Java, exclusively dedicated to drug-related crimes,  Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said on Thursday (12/20/2023) "The Ministry of Law and Human Rights has established an high-security prison. Hopefully, the president would soon inspect and inaugurate it," he was quoted by antaranews.com as saying after a Cabinet Meeting on the subject led by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo. Nusa Kambangan island is a prison island, which already house some high-security prisons. The move to create a specialized prison with enhanced security measures comes as a response to the rampant drug-related crimes in Indonesia. Minister Mahfud pointed out that a significant portion of the inmates in existing prisons are drug users, leading to severe overcrowding. "These prisons will be equipped with special maximum-security measures exclusively for drug offenders," Head of the BNN, Commissioner General Petrus Reinhard Golose, explained. The Indonesian National Police (INP) and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) have been devising special measures to deal with drug traffickers and dealers more effectively. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
