Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Health has launched a comprehensive investigation into hospital internship sites after three medical interns recently passed away from various illnesses.
"Our preliminary findings show no indication of excessive workloads. Each of the three interns worked less than 40 hours per week," said Dr. Yuli Farianti, the Director General of Health Human Resources, during a press briefing in Jakarta on Monday (30/3/2026), as cited by antaranews.com.
She clarified that the fatalities resulted from medical complications rather than exhaustion, as previously speculated on social media. One medical intern in Cianjur succumbed to measles with cardiac and cerebral complications, while another in Surabaya died following a severe bout of anemia. The third case in Denpasar was attributed to Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) with shock complications.
Dr. Yuli said that the ministry will now refine supervision policies and improve communication with interns' families to prevent self-treatment during illness. The evaluation aims to ensure that the hospitals maintain strict safety standards for young doctors fulfilling their educational requirements.
