Inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. The Deputy of Foreign Politics of Coordinating Ministry for Politics, Law and Security, Rina P. Soemarno reports that human trafficking has gotten worse in West Kalimantan, particularly in the sectors of online gambling, online scam, and efforts in protecting abroad Indonesian citizens.
“Human trafficking in West Kalimantan has become really concerning and now we really need the directions and decisions from the President as there are 70 victims already in West Kalimantan according to the sample. West Kalimantan has become the third highest victim of human trafficking following North Sumatra and North Sulawesi,” says Rina, Monday (11/20/2023).
According to the ministry data, the online scam case until last October 2023 has gone up to 3,347 cases. Meanwhile, on November 4th, 2023 there have been 935 cases with 1,049 suspects and 2,797 victims have been processed by the authority.
“Most of the case ensnare those who have high education. They are also came from the cities and very well versed with information technology. Unfortunately, they were victims of work abuse in Southeast Asia for illicit works and even resort to scam their own people,” says Rina.
“We identify the majority of human trafficking cases was due to non-procedural placement of Indonesian migrant workers,” says Rina Deputy.
It requires strong law enforcement to arrest the victims as it linked to many criminal actions including corruption, gratification, bribery, and money laundering.
“It is not easy to handle this case as there are many victims who are unaware that they are the victim, or them enjoyed being the victim, or them being shy. They, especially the youths who have the power in social media, do not want to believe the stories of other victim, and prefer the information shared in social media. This proved to be a challenge for us,” says Rina.
