Inp.polri.go.id - Tokyo. The Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration has launched its e-passport service at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, Japan on Friday (26/7/2024).

Director General Silmy Karim symbolically presented the first e-passport issued by the Tokyo embassy to Oulaya Nur Shofia, a 10-year-old Indonesian resident in Japan in a ceremony attended by the Indonesian community in Tokyo.

“The e-passport service will greatly benefit Indonesians living in the Tokyo embassy's jurisdiction, eliminating the need to travel back to Indonesia for passport renewal,” he said, as quoted by antaranews.com..

The Indonesian embassy in Tokyo is the seventh Indonesian representative office to offer e-passports, following those in Singapore, Seoul, The Hague, Jeddah, Los Angeles, and Berlin.

In 2023, the embassy issued 8,974 passports to about 149,101 Indonesians residing in Japan. The number of monthly passport applications has surged to 1,400-1,600 in 2024.

Director General Silmy emphasized that expanding e-passport services enhances Indonesia's global standing and simplifies visa applications by improving data security and immigration processes.
