Inp.polri.go.id - Dubai.  Indonesia's pavilion at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2023 (COP28) in Dubai served as a hub of discussion on various strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The discourse spans sectors such as forestry, energy and waste management, demonstrating Indonesia's commitment to combating climate change. Speaking at the COP28 pavilion in Dubai on Thursday (30/11/2023), Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar outlined Indonesia's multi-pronged efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, antaranews.com reported. "In 2023, these sectors together will contribute to a significant reduction in Indonesia's greenhouse gas emissions by 42.1 percent compared to business as usual," she said. Forestry and other land use (FOLU) continues to be the main driver, contributing a substantial 60 per cent of Indonesia's total GHG emission reduction. Indonesia has outlined operational plans for the FOLU Net Sink 2030 Agenda, which aims to exceed its emissions with a higher greenhouse gas sequestration rate in the FOLU sector. Minister Siti expressed optimism about achieving the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target, attributing it to a decline in deforestation in recent years. Indonesia has been a leader on climate change, particularly during this year's El Niño drought. Successful efforts to control peatland fires have prevented cross-border smoke. "These achievements are not automatic, but the result of concrete efforts on the ground, even during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic," said Minister Siti. Lestari Moerdijat, Deputy Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), urged all stakeholders to support Indonesia's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. She called on businesses and non-governmental organisations to work together to lay a constitutional foundation by promoting an enabling environment. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
