Inp.polri.go.id - Palembang. The Indonesian National Police (INP) is advocating for a spatio-temporal approach to prevent forest and land fires by mapping risk zones based on location, historical occurrence, climate patterns, and peatland characteristics.

"Land and forest fires management cannot rely solely on responding after flames appear. We must read fire patterns, identify high-risk zones, and implement preventive measures before fires spread," said INP Head of Security Maintenance Agency Commissioner General Herry Heryawan during an analysis and evaluation meeting in South Sumatra on Saturday (31/10/2026).

Highlighting a 20-year fire pattern simulation in Pelalawan Regency, Riau, he noted that hotspots recur in identical locations, with El Niño phenomena causing average hotspots to spike to 362 compared to 42 in standard years.

To operationalize early intervention under the "From Detection to Action" principle, the INP is developing the Green Policing Dashboard to integrate real-time hotspot tracking, weather metrics, and groundwater level monitoring across local police offices in fire-prone regions, as reported by antaranews.com.
