Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo addressed the challenges facing the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) in maintaining public order and security in Papua.
Speaking at Brimob's 79th anniversary event in Depok, West Java, on Thursday )(4/11/2024), he revealed a sharp increase in armed political groups (KKP) following the establishment of new autonomous regions and special autonomy funding for Papua.
“A few years ago, there were around 300 KKP members; now, that number has surged to over 1,400,” Chief Sigit explained, suggesting that the rise indicates government programs aimed at improving welfare in Papua may not yet be fully accepted or understood by locals.
The escalation, he noted, poses specific challenges for Brimob personnel, who must be ready to address the situation.
The INP are currently conducting Damai Cartenz Operation 2024, focusing on law enforcement against KKP and armed criminal groups (KKB) with a human-rights-centered approach, according to antaranews.com.
The operation, active since J1 anuary 2024, also emphasizes community outreach, intelligence gathering, and public engagement, covering areas across Central Papua and the Papua Mountains, including Jayapura and eight other districts.
