Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP) Police Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team is accelerating forensic procedures to identify victims of the KM Virgo Transport 8 ship that sank in the Java Sea.

As of Tuesday (22/9/2026), search teams recovered 18 deceased victims. Authorities positively identified nine of the victims and returned them to their families, while nine bodies remain under examination.

"Antemortem data collected from families forms a vital part of the reconciliation process to ensure accurate identification before releasing victims," said Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, the Head of the Public Information Bureau of the INP Public Relations Division.

Forensic officers from the West Java Regional Police Medical Unit collected family DNA samples for testing at the INP Medical Bureau while South Kalimantan Regional Police teams and Inafis forensic identification officers examine recovered remains. 

National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) records indicate 108 survivors, 18 fatalities, and 117 passengers remaining missing out of 243 listed on the manifest, as reported by antaranews.com
