inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP) Traffic Corps has implemented facial recognition technology in its Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system to identify traffic violators even when using fake license plates or without license plates.

The Director of Law Enforcement at the INP Traffic Corps, Brigadier General I Made Agus Prasatya, stated in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/5/2026) that the implementation of this technology was directed by the Head of INP Traffic Corps, Inspector General Wibowo.

According to INP Traffic Corps data, during the first semester of 2026, ETLE cameras recorded 16,812 license plate violations, including those involving the absence of license plates or the use of fake license plates. 77.24 percent of the violations were committed by motorcyclists.

According to Agus, facial recognition technology allows the ETLE cameras to recognize drivers' faces and match them with population data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration.

With this system, drivers' identities can still be identified even when vehicles use fake license plates, have their license plates covered, or are missing.

In addition to enhancing the accuracy of traffic law enforcement, this technology is also expected to support the detection of road crimes and ensure that violation confirmation letters are sent to the appropriate parties.

Agus added that the Traffic Corps continues to optimize patrols by Highway Patrol personnel and the Law Enforcement Sub-Directorate in areas prone to violations, prioritizing ETLE-based law enforcement and a humanistic approach.

"We are not proud of taking action. Law enforcement is a last resort. What we prioritize is public compliance through the ETLE system and the use of technology to ensure safety, order, and legal certainty on the roads," he said.
