Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Jayapura administration in Papua has requested the Jayapura Sub-regional Police to investigate fires that occurred in five different locations in the region on Sunday (7/12/2024).
The acting mayor of Jayapura, Frans Pekey, said that successive fires in different locations in one day was very rare, let alone in a matter of hours, antaranews.com reported.
"This incident (fire) has never happened before, so we ask the police to investigate the cause of the fire," he said.
Mayor Pekey explained that the locations of the fires were the Youtefa traditional market, where 20 stalls were burnt down, residential areas around Jalan Baru Youtefa, where as many as 18 families were victims, then the Youtefa Flower Hotel building and Perumnas Tiga Waena, and in the South Jayapura District area.
Mayor Pekey suspected possible deliberate arson based on videos and photos circulating in the community.
"We also ask our residents to be more aware of fires and also to be aware of people who deliberately burn land," he reiterated.
