inp.polri.go.id - Bengkayang. Responding to the detection of hotspots in Sungai Raya District, Bengkayang Sub-regional Police Chief, Superintendent Syahirul Awab, personally led the extinguishing efforts in Sungai Duri Village, Bengkayang Regency, on Wednesday (8/12/2026).
This integrated effort involved personnel from the Bengkayang Sub-regional Police, Sungai Raya Sector Police, the Indonesian Military (TNI), Manggala Agni, the Bengkayang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Mensacosa Fire Department, the Fire Awareness Community (MPA), the Sungai Duri Village Destana, and the local community.
This swift action was taken after data from the Lancang Kuning and Sipongi applications detected two hotspots in Sungai Duri Village on Tuesday (8/11/2026). Both hotspots were monitored through Lancang Kuning data sources, the NASA-SNPP satellite, with a medium confidence level.
Chief Syahirul and a joint team then conducted direct verification to confirm the actual conditions on the ground in Melapis Hamlet, Sungai Duri Village, Sungai Raya District.
Field inspections revealed a burned area, with flames still burning, albeit not large, approximately 10 meters from the hotspot coordinates. The joint team immediately extinguished the fire and any remaining embers on the peatland.
Preliminary data collection revealed that each location had a burned area of approximately 1.5 hectares. Therefore, the total area affected by the fires is estimated to be approximately 3 hectares.
The burned area consisted of scrub and saplings on a peat soil. The location also borders community plantations. The dry and yellowing vegetation makes the area highly flammable if not promptly addressed.
The joint team immediately extinguished and cooled the affected area. A search was also conducted to ensure there were no remaining embers or ignition sources that could cause a re-ignition.
The Bengkayang Sub-regional Police Chief stated that handling the hotspots requires a rapid response and cooperation from all parties, especially given the dry nature of the land and its location in a peatland area.
