Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. A joint team from the Security Maintenance Agency of the Indonesian National Police (INPi), Central Kalimantan Regional Police, and the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) rescued a sun bear cub displaced by forest and land fires on Friday (23/10/2026).
The protected cub was found near plantation and forest areas in Lampasan Village, Seruyan Regency, after a local resident, identified as Sugiarto, temporarily secured the animal to protect it from advancing flames and smoke.
"Upon receiving information from a member of the public, the team immediately coordinated with BKSDA to execute the rescue. Our priority was to ensure the animal was safe and received proper care," said Director of Mounted and Canine Police Brigadier General Tory Kristianto.
Following an initial medical check, officers confirmed the cub suffered no severe injuries or respiratory issues from smoke exposure.
Chief Tory named the cub "Meli," an acronym for Menyelamatkan Yang Liar (Rescuing the Wild). The cub was safely evacuated to the BKSDA conservation facility in Pangkalan Bun, West Kotawaringin Regency, for further rehabilitation.
