Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) of Papua had hoped that the proposal to designate Papua as a dedicated sports province would soon become a reality through the issuance of a Presidential Regulation or Presidential Decree.
This initiative aimed to foster and direct the youth of Papua towards sports, with the intent of shaping their character, said KONI Papua's Chairman Kenius Kogoya during a meeting with Vice President Ma'ruf Amin at Lukas Enembe Stadium in Jayapura Regency on Wednesday,
He emphasized the significance of hosting sports events involving Asia-Pacific nations in Papua. This was due to the presence of internationally recognized facilities like Lukas Enembe Stadium, which were constructed for the 20th National Sports Week (PON).
"Such events are necessary to ensure the proper maintenance of sports facilities in Papua following the XX PON," Kenius said
"Thus, this alignment is not limited to Papua alone, rather every region across Indonesia must adopt a DBOD to facilitate sports development effectively," he asserted.

He had expressed gratitude to President Joko Widodo and Vice President Ma'ruf Amin for their efforts in establishing competition venues in Papua in preparation for the PON, stating that these endeavors had increased the Papuan population's confidence in the central government.
The Vice President had shared his vision of designating Papua as a sports province, highlighting the wealth of talent among the region's youth. The government, he said, has established a National Sports Grand Design (DBON), an effort that would be incomplete without the proper implementation of the Regional Sports Grand Design (DBOD) at the regional level.
