Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia has been re-elected to the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council for the sixth time, following an election held by the UN General Assembly in New York, United States.
Alongside Kuwait, Japan, and China, Indonesia secured its seat as a representative of the Asia-Pacific region for the 2024-2026 term after receiving the highest number of votes, with 186 out of a total of 192.
Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that that this achievement represented the highest number of votes Indonesia has ever received in its history of UN Human Rights Council nominations. Indonesia previously held seats on the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2006-2007, 2007-2010, 2011-2014, 2015-2017, and 2020-2022.
"This signifies the trust placed in Indonesia to continue contributing to the advancement and protection of human rights," Minister Retno said during a press briefing on Wednesday (12/10/2023).
Under the theme "Inclusive Partnership for Humanity" for Indonesia's membership in the UN Human Rights Council, Minister Retno emphasized the pivotal role of inclusive partnerships in advancing and protecting human rights.
She outlined three key priorities for Indonesia's tenure on the Human Rights Council: enhancing capacities to promote and protect human rights, fostering substantive dialogue among countries and regional groups and encouraging the reinforcement of multilateralism based on principles of solidarity, inclusiveness, and equality.
The UN Human Rights Council comprises 47 member states, with Africa and Asia-Pacific represented by 13 countries each, South America and the Caribbean by 8 countries, Eastern Europe by 6 countries, and other regions by 7 countries.
