The quake's epicenter was located at 5.81°S, 130.68°E, approximately 167 km southeast of Banda, at a depth of 158 km. The tremor was felt at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale II in Banda Naira, Sorong, and Saumlaki.
