Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected a powerful magnitude 7 earthquake striking North Kalimantan in the early hours of Monday (23/2/2026).
According to official data, the epicenter was located inland at a depth of 630 kilometers, positioned northwest of Tana Tidung Regency.
"This information prioritizes speed, so the data processing is not yet stable and is subject to change as more complete reports arrive," the agency said on its official website reported by antaranews.com.
Despite the high magnitude, the earthquake occurred at an extreme depth within the earth's crust, which typically limits the intensity of surface shaking and reduces the likelihood of a tsunami.
BMKG has not yet issued any official warnings regarding potential aftershocks or sea-level changes. Authorities are currently monitoring the situation for reports of structural damage or casualties in the affected regencies, as the agency continues to stabilize its seismic analysis for a final report.
