Inp.polri.go.id - Samarinda. Mahakam I Bridge in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, suffered its 23rd collision after a coal-laden barge crashed into its safety fender late Saturday night.

The accident occurred around 11:30 pm local time when the towing line of the barge reportedly snapped, causing the vessel to drift uncontrollably and strike the fourth bridge pillar’s fender.

"We are already on site to conduct a review and coordinate further steps," said Yudi Kusmiyanto, the Head of Sailing Safety at the Samarinda Port Authority, on Sunday (27/4/2025).

Two East Kalimantan legislators and maritime police were seen inspecting the damage on Sunday morning. Initial reports from local residents on social media suggested a loose barge drifting under the bridge before a loud crash was heard, according to antaranws.com.

Separately, state-owned port operator Pelindo in East Kalimantan clarified that the incident happened outside official bridge-crossing hours.

"Our role was to assist in evacuating the barge to ensure maritime safety," said Ali Akbar, a Pelindo's spokesperson.

The Mahakam I Bridge, built in 1982 and inaugurated in 1986, remains a critical yet vulnerable link—its iconic steel structure now facing its 23rd test.
