INP Spokesperson Declares Improved Situation in Gorontalo After Mining Protest

Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  Inspector General Sandi Nugroho, the Head of the Indonesian National Police (INP) Public Relations Division, said on Thursday  (21/9/2023) that the situation in Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo, has become more stable following protests demanding compensation for mining land. "We received the latest information report earlier today, and the situation in Gorontalo is now conducive," Sandi was quoted by antaranews.com as saying. The general emphasized that the incident in Gorontalo should serve as a lesson for all parties involved, highlighting the importance of prioritizing communication and mediation in resolving such issues. A total of 650 personnel from the Gorontalo Regional Police  and Pohuwato Sub-regional Police  were deployed to secure the protesters in Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo, earlier on Thursday. The spokesperson for the Gorontalo Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Desmont Harjendro, said that the demonstrators had damaged structures within the mining company premises in the area. In addition, the Regent's office in Pohuwato was set on fire, and the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) office was vandalized by the protesters, who were demanding compensation for the mining land. Pohuwato Regency is located at the western tip of Gorontalo Province, bordering Central Sulawesi Province. The journey from Gorontalo City to Pohuwato takes approximately 5-6 hours by road.(mg/inp/pr/nm)
