Inp.polri.go.id - Beijing. The enthusiasm among Indonesian citizens residing in Hong Kong and Macau for the 2024 election has surged, with a total of 76,481 exercising their voting rights, either directly at polling stations or via mail.
Agustinus Guntoro, the Chairman of the Overseas Election Committee (PPLN) in Hong Kong and Macau, said that it marked a 64.5 percent increase from the 46,491 total voters recorded in 2019, antaranews.com reported.
Of this total, 753 voters cast their ballots directly at four designated polling stations, centralized at the Indonesian Consulate General building in Hong Kong on Tuesday (13/2/2024).
The direct polling constituted 31.5 percent of the total 2,390 Permanent Voter List at the polling stations.
Agustinus praised the smooth polling process at the polling stations, attributing it to the collaborative efforts of PPLN, supervisory committees, and other stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the acceptance of mail-in ballots will continue until 15 February 2024, with 75,728 ballots already received by PPLN in Hong Kong and Macau.
The 2024 elections in Hong Kong and Macau were conducted differently than previous ones. Only the Indonesian Consulate General building in Hong Kong was permitted by the Chinese and local authorities to host the elections due to limited capacity and resources.
With 164,691 registered Indonesian voters, Hong Kong and Macau rank as the third-largest overseas election area.
