Inp.polri.go.id - Padang. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources' Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has elevated Mount Marapi's status in West Sumatra to level III, or "Siaga" (Alert). Hendra Gunawan, PVMBG's Head, said in a statement on Tuesday (9/1/2024) that "based on comprehensive analysis and evaluation, Mount Marapi's activity level was raised from level II (Caution) to level III (Alert) on January 9, 2024, at 6 pm." With this increased status, PVMBG issued recommendations, advising residents, climbers, visitors, and tourists to avoid entering or engaging in activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius from the eruption center, known as Verbeek crater. Moreover, residents in areas around valleys, streams, and riverbanks originating from Mount Marapi's peak are encouraged to remain vigilant, particularly during the rainy season, due to the potential threat of lava. In case of ashfall, the public is instructed to wear masks to prevent respiratory issues and use protective gear for their eyes and skin. Additionally, people are urged to secure clean water sources and clear rooftops from thick volcanic ash to prevent collapse, as reported by antaranews.com. Importantly, everyone is called upon to refrain from spreading false narratives or hoaxes and to avoid being influenced by unclear sources of information. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
