Inp.polri.go.id - Yogyakarta. Mount Merapi, located on the border of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta, released 148 lava avalanches towards the southwest over the past week, from 26 July to 1 August, 2024.

Agus Budi Santoso, the Head of the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG), said on Sunday (4/8/2024) that the lava flows traveled up to 1,800 meters towards the Bebeng River. Small to medium-sized eruptions were heard 10 times from Kaliurang and Babadan Posts.

Mount Merapi expelled one hot cloud avalanche that reached 1,000 meters, according to antaranews.com.

Agus said that BPPTKG recorded a 22-increase in lava flows from the previous week. The southwest dome's morphology has changed due to dome growth and lava activity, while the central dome remains stable.

Seismic activity increased this week, with 1 hot cloud quake, 30 shallow volcanic quakes, 114 phase quakes, 3 low-frequency quakes, 735 avalanche quakes, and 4 tectonic quakes recorded.

The volcano's alert status remains at Level III, with potential dangers including lava and hot clouds reaching up to 7 km from the summit.
