OJK Shuts Down 1,466 Illegal Online Lenders

Indonesia's financial authority (OJK) has cracked down on 1,466 illegal online lending platforms, better known locally "pinjol" and closed 18 unlawful investment entities between January 1 and October 6, 2023. "OJK, together with all members of the Task Force, consisting of 12 ministries/agencies, has continued to enhance coordination in tackling illegal investments and online lending activities," said Kiki, the Executive Head of Supervision of Financial Business Behavior, Education, and Consumer Protection at OJK, during the virtual press conference on Monday (9/10/2023). She explained that OJK has received a total of 8,047 complaints from the public regarding the proliferation of illegal financial service entities. Among these complaints, 7,710 were related to illegal online lending, while 337 pertained to illegal investments. The majority of complaints came from West Java and Jakarta, antaranews.com reported. Over the same period, OJK received a total of 16,555 complaints from the financial sector, including 7,719 from banking, 3,475 from fintech, 2,793 from financing companies (PP), 1,147 from insurance, and 1,421 from capital markets and other non-banking financial sectors. Furthermore, OJK conducted 2,058 financial education and inclusion activities, with 459,111 participants. The financial education program "Sikapi Uangmu" reached 323 sessions, attracting 1,505,182 viewers. The LMSKU OJK platform offered 45,894 access modules, with 37,320 module completions, underlining OJK's commitment to financial literacy and consumer protection. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
