Inp.polri.go.id - Biak. Papua Regional Police and the joint team continue search operations in Biak Numfor following the deadly explosion of a World War II-era bomb on Sunday in a fisheries complex that killed five people, injured 18, and displaced 56 residents.
Biak Numfor Sub-regional Police Chief Superintendent Ari Trestiawan confirmed on Tuesday (2/6/2026) that three victims remain missing.
“Search efforts focus on coastal areas, while the immediate blast zone remains restricted until bomb disposal teams declare it safe,” he said.
The Gegana bomb squad discovered additional dangerous items, including modified grenades and projectiles, which were safely destroyed. Further disposal operations are planned to ensure no unexploded ordnance remains.
Authorities have reinforced the site with extra personnel and forensic teams. Emergency shelters and social support are being provided by local government agencies.
Local residents are urged to avoid the restricted zone until clearance is complete.
